I began to realize today that when I'm not listening to Steely Dan, I fantasize about listening to Steely Dan, and it gave me a bit of a pause. Sometimes I engineer situations specifically as opportunities to rock the Dan.

Do you cats think it's possible to become psychology addicted to certain tunes, and if so, do you consider it something to watch out for, or something
benign?

well we all go through our music stages. i am presently addicted to jimi hendrix. must get my daily fix. then i switch to dave holland to break away. went
through a steely dan phase, too.
my old bassist has an addiction to music in general. it's his front-and-center priority. sleeps with his guitar and tape player next to his bed, is constantly youtubing bands, always listens to other bands. knows just about every band that's ever played. it's kinda freaky, actually. you could be addicted to worse things, though. |

Hi, my name's Bill and I'm a music addict.
To which you respond, "Hi Bill." Some folks like film. Others are obsessive about books. Or cooking. I like music. Love music. Right now it's King Crimson. Who knows what tomorrow will bring!

Bad Company-Ready for Love...
http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=frhHSNn2zJw&feature=related I must have listened to that song a few hundred times this week alone-I keep hitting repeat on my IPod...its the whole song and the drumming is sweet to my ears. I guess that is a Ballad? I am finding this is what I have been doing lately and it is helping my timing by replaying-counting-tapping- whatever...not just Rock-last week it was Buddy Rich-Santana-Blues Traveler-Casting Crowns, well maybe mostly rock. this drives my wife crazy-but she loves me and puts up with it. Next week it will be a different song-Genre? rick |

Dr. John for me. It must be just me, but I find Steely Dan rock with lab coats. I respect it for what it is, great musician ship, just always picture the
band wearing lab coats while recording the tracks. I feel the same about Boston.

there are certain things for all of us I bet. things that most people LOVE... but that just don't register in my head..... I was the pit drummer for a
comedy show, it always blew my mind where the audience would laugh, or at what.......... after a few months I came to the conclusion that I have NO CONCEPT of
what most people actually find funny..... its a good thing i guess, if we all liked exactly the same stuff, the scene would get pretty boring.

Interesting, those observations about the Dan and Boston, they did get pretty clinical and precise, maybe obsessive?
I saw a recent interview with Becker and Fagen for the current Steely Dan tour, they actually consciously chose not to tour in their "prime" because they were so obsessed with making perfect records. As for lab coats, at least with Abbey Road, it was part of the dress code. Sir Cliff Richard, whose 1958 single "Move It" is considered England's first-ever rock-and-roll record. As far as a listening addiction, I went through the listening everyday thing years ago, I would just use headphones and let really complex Zappa and Jazz stuff wash over and filter through. I don't do that kind of listening day to day now, but if I go for a few days without listening to any music, I notice an incredible shift in my mood toward the positive. I do believe that music is like fish, great brain "food". |

I remember hearing about the lab coat thing, I think, in a George Martin interview in a Beatles documentary.
So I typed in a search terms, "Abbey Road" and "Lab Coats"..that article came up. |
