sadly, that is not true. one consumer has no power to penalize an industry, only to reward individuals outside of it. yes, consumers as a whole body determine absolutely what is and is not on the market, but no, you as a person don't have any say in it whatsoever as long as you limit your action to purchasing certain things and abstaining from purchasing other things. if this were not truly the case, then the single greatest act you could commit for social change would be suicide. the good news is that you have power in another arena, namely arts/media. it would be easy to read this post as dismissive of conscientious consumer practices, but really i'm saying that you can't trick yourself into thinking that individual consumers can make a change by individual consumption. the change requires a group of consumers, and one that is larger than any other group of consumers. so, more important than your day to day purchases is your level of activity in advocating for change. that said, thanks to you, Scott, for bringing this movie to our attention.
