Hey Billy! I needed an intellectual shot in the arm so I plugged in my copy of "Voices" today. There was something I noticed: in your Lineage of
Jazz section, all of the guys you mentioned seemed to work in combos; maybe larger ensembles but nothing that would ever really be considered "big
band", at least to my mind. I know that Art Blakey played with sextets and Baby Dodds is considered pre-BB, but I think the point still holds.
I guess my question is whether or not you draw a distinction in style between combo and big band, or is it all "jazz"? Is there a reason you mention the small-to-moderate ensemble guys specifically?
