I think Jeepn brings up a point that I haven't really heard from many places... namely, the problem of the number of health care professionals. Congress could pass whatever they want, but that doesn't mean the manpower exists to adequately do much about it. Anything we do with the health care system will mean systemic change, and regardless of what happens (i.e., overhaul in either party direction vs. nothing) it's a mind-bogglingly complex issue. We not only have to have enough doctors and nurses, but we need to have the medical infrastructure to handle the volume of patients and all the flotsam that comes with them--merely digitizing and networking medical records on a large scale will cut back on redundant administrative/clerical work, but that's only one piece of the puzzle and is itself a huge headache. Whether the country goes socialized or in some other direction or merely stays the same, health care is already effectively rationed--it's more a matter of who does and doesn't get rations, in my opinion. No matter what type of health care system we look at, there will always be drawbacks, and one can always find horror-story anecdotes from any existing system regardless of how it's configured.

Those hecklers are disgraceful... and I bet they haven't read a single sentence of what's actually been proposed so far. The majority of them (on both sides) are likely accepting second-hand information and half-truths and total lies from any number of sources. I'm all in favor of a national debate on this, but part of me feels silly for expecting either side of the debate to be particularly well-informed most of the time. And part of me knows that whatever happens, nothing will conform in the long run to whatever plans we start out with (because few things ever do), so it's not like health care won't be shaped and altered in the future--if not by federal mandate, then by state laws and market forces. I could be wrong about my own interpretation of the bill (and I'll readily admit I don't have a solid grasp on the practice and administration of medical care to begin with), but I'd rather be wrong and know why than be stubbornly ignorant.
