My sax friends told me that Joe plays a very thin reed, thus (among many other important things) lending towards that amazing and unique sound of his.

I'll have to check this record out for sure. I don't have much jazz from the 70's.
other Joe Henderson that I like: In 'n Out with Elvin, Lush Life with Gregory Hutchinson. |

In my burned up CD collection, I had Joe's "Lush Life" after a day at a crappy job,
that record could make you feel the joy in life.
That CD never left my changer, I think it won a Grammy. I have to get that record again.. So Lenny also played on Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew", and by the way, Lenny has been called a "Tony Williams Fanatic" and replaced Tony in Mile's band. Imagine that, replacing your drum idol and mentor. Wanna hear insane drumming from Lenny White, check out Return To Forever's "Romantic Warrior"

The "Spaced out Pirate" reference was:
"Lenny White-The Adventures of Astral Pirates." Most of my senior year in H.S. was spent digesting everything Return To Forever...and all the members solo projects; Al D.M. "Land of the Midnight Sun..." Stanley C. "School Daze" Etc...I was neck deep in all that stuff...Lenny was very influential to me...in that setting at least...I was even in a band that did R.T.F. covers! Aaaah, Lenny...a cute Lenny story told to me by someone who was there: At a large music convention in Chicago, a drummers collective was gathered at a large theatre and Lenny was the speaker of honor...as it went, a lot of the questions were being tossed out to Lenny by a bunch of white kids who were asking very technical questions: "So Mr. White...on the Second album you did with so and so...were those H.hat beats 16th notes? Blah Blah Blah...as to which Lenny very patiently and eloquently answered them all...when a question from the back was tended to by the staff running around with microphones...it was a black gentleman...and his question went like this...'Say Lenny...where did you get that hat? That's a bad hat, baby! Where did you get that hat?" Not that black or white has anything to do with the price of tea in China...but it is a cute story by all counts... amba
