Maura Update 1--8-09 |
Lead | |
|
With all of the thoughts and prayers coming in, I feel as if I owe you guys an update. Maura's been in the hospital for 9 weeks. She is now at Columbia
Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. These doctors at THE CATS for leukemia. we met with one of the team, who stepped us through what is ahead. She is very thorough,
confident, calm and kind. Our beloved internist (also a drummer) attended the meeting as well - along with a very smart friend who took notes. Maura and I knew
we wouldn't really hear or understand everything that was said. In a nutshell, they are going to begin getting our insurance to approve a bone marrow (aka
stem cell) transplant. There are donors all over the world and it is unlikely that Maura will not find a match. If she doesn't find a match, then there are
more alternatives. Right now, we are hoping she gets her leukemic cells down to 5% or less. This current (third chemo) course will pan out (results will be in)
within a month. And BTW, this third course is a bit of an experimental one, though it has much groundwork in the tried and true way (as has gone before).
Again, there are alternatives to do if her bad cells don't drop. She very well may be able to go home for a little while then. In a month. Maybe only for a
few days - maybe not at all - maybe she will have to wait for the donor.. many different things can happen. As soon as the insurance OKs the procedure and the
donor is found, we're going for it. There are alternatives to bone marrow or (also called) stem cell transplant, but the only way she gets cured to outlive
us all is to do this procedure. Everything else is a badly made band-aid. The transplant will take approx. 6 months until she is cleared to come home. if you
have been reading some of my posts (and most of you have), it is obvious I need to pace myself emotionally a little better through this year.

Thank you for this Billy. And know that she has stayed in our thoughts. And as far as your posts over the last day or two go..........that's why we all
dig you so much. You're human. Just like us. You just happen to be a better drummer. Big deal.
Love to you and Maura (as a matter of fact, when you next visit her, would you please plant a good one on her cheek for me?) Wayne |

Good news, Billy, thank you for letting us know. This failed agnostic, musically religious, non-dogmatic church
drummer prays for you two every Sunday and often in between.

Thanks Billy!
There is a lot of positive energy all over the world being generated for Maura, and for you as well brother! I don't necessarily think this positive energy reaches you any other way than when we tell you.... that we are in your corner... rooting... hoping... cheering... praying... and thinking of you and Maura daily. I have had several very close friends who've gone through the process you're going through.... And you're spot on... draw energy from others... be a big enough guy to accept help... and dig in and make it happen.. I have faith in you... and my wife and I are rooting for you guys every step of the way!!! much love your way! -john and Jen (and wee-Johnny) |

Billy, I'm so glad to hear that things are moving forward. I had been wondering what was going on for awhile now (that's why I wrote that song for you
and Maura). Your last post was kinda negative, but this one is so much more positive and good. I'm very happy to hear it. You and Maura have a huge
supportive world around you....So take care man!

Great news Billy. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure it's not easy to throw all this out there.
My wife's former employer offered screening for potential bone marrow donors. G-dog (wifey) took 'em up on it and is on the National Registry for donors. I think this is something others can do...but I think they generally charge for the screening. Her company picked up the fee...I think it was a blood sample and her info is kept for a potential future match. Just looked it up. Here's the link. http://www.marrow.org/index.html I think it's $52 to take the screening kit. Small price to donate in exchange for saving someone's life. All the best BIlly!!!! |

Thanks for the update. I'll keep praying for you and Maura. Is there anything else that we can do for you? Send you two something. I don't know.
Anything that you think is too much to ask, go ahead and ask. I'll bet everyone here would agree with me. Put us out. We don't mind.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. Here's today: She had a 104 fever today. ice packs all around her. Can't eat/nausea - everyday has
something like this. I need to figure out a way to pace myself through this. (and this was a good day) this is EASILY a six month transition to wellness and I
need to be able to deal. I have no patience. Anyone that's ever had a lesson with me or played with me knows that!

More light filled love headed your way.
I'm honored to be considered part of the family. I feel deeply for you and Maura. Keep taking deep breaths and know you have our support. "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." Cheesy, I know but it's from a card my mom sent to me when I was going through a dark time. The message seemed to help. Love and Healing Vibes, Maddy |

Billy,
Thank you for sharing the latest with us. The number of replies to your posts here and on other forums firmly demonstrates that we are all pulling for both of you. As you say, the next few months will be challenging and they will require some stamina as well as faith. While there may be some trying times ahead, there is light at the end of the tunnel, don't lose focus on that. I think it is safe to say you have a large support group here to reaffirm anything for you so please don't hesitate to reach out if needed. Regards, Kevin |
