So if you have any comments about the movie, or questions, please post them here.
My "era" of the film slightly after the heyday of the Charlottesville All Stars.
I missed "Captain Tunes" entirely.
My sister attended UVA and I attended James Madison University, so I would always see certain bands playing at "The Elbow Room" in Harrisonburg or at The Mousetrap or some of the clubs in C-ville.
The bands I saw perform with great regularity between 1979 to 1982 were Johnny Sportcoat and The Casuals, the amazing Skip Castro Band, The Nighthawks, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz, and Steady Rollin Bob Margolin.
Some revelations from the film:
Skip Castro took most of their live set material performing amped up covers from what was called "race music": African American Rhythm and Blues Musicians like Wynonie Harris and Big Joe Turner.
This was music created during a bridge period between the Big Band Era and Early Rock and Roll circa late 40s to early 50s.
As Charlie Pastorfield notes, this really was where Chuck Berry took his influences from and was in effect , the first Rock and Roll.
I thought Skip was all original, and in a sense they were, because I haven't heard a band play music like that before or sense.
Skip backed up Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Big Joe Turner.
Skip guitarist Bo Randall still has his Gibson Les Paul it has to be 30 or more years old.
Another revelation for me was Boyd Tinsley being influenced by the same bands I saw, as he mentions.
Anyway, I would love to hear any feedback on the film.
