Great guessing Ferguson and John...I got your PM's!

Let's see if we could get some guesses going!!!!!

I just got a PM from Mr. Billy Ward and here it is;
"Hey Chris - I was just able to listen. it very much feels like Roy Haynes. He really likes doing that post elvin hi-hat rhythms playing with his snare while the ride is going - he is so creative. For some reason, i never have known his work as much as the in depth studies I've had of Blakey / Tony / Elvin /Jack. But he's a bad boy (assuming it's him) The one thing that is bugging me is that it sounds like his cymbals are darker than usual for Roy - they sound more like tony's cymbals... or Bill Stewart's. tthe playing feels too self-activated (don't know how else to describe it) to be Bill Stewart. It could be that if i'm wrong about Roy, that it is Tony doing this style for the session... anyway - my guess on the rest of the band is Scofield and Steve Swallow on bass. thanks again for doing this! I hope I'm wrong completely!!!!"

I can see how you would pick Roy he shares a common playing style with this WAI drummer,which is largely distinguished by its melodic focus, and its polyrhythmic, or layered, character. The Elvin influence is definitely there, Haynes' status as the preferred substitute for Elvin Jones in the historic Coltrane Quartet (1961-65), with which he made some of its most remarkable recordings. Coltrane, too, considered Haynes one of the best drummers he ever worked with. But NO to Roy Haynes. Real close guess though. As for Tony, it could be him as well the strong independent use of the hi-hats as well as unique comping, it's all there, thats for sure! But NO for Tony. Great guesses Billy ,it could have easily been either one.

However you are right about the ever nimble bassist Steve Swallow and of course the umistakable sounds of Sco's jazzy guitar,straight bebop with incredible fire! Go Billy!!

This particular WAI drummer's playing brings you to the edge and keeps you there, he gives you the feeling he's going to take you way out of your comfort zone but he never stops swinging.

Yes!!...It is Bill Stewart..........Off the album John Scofield Trio Live (En Route)! This session was recorded at The Blue Note Jazz club in NYC in December of 2003. The track is "Travel John" and he is he killing or what!

Bill Stewart plays with such dynamic precision, that his ideas are articulated with a pleasing exactness and clarity. Bill is definitely carrying on the best tradition of jazz drummers in the post modern jazz scene.

Notable mentions go out to Ferguson,Johncurry and Matz for PM's that were correct.
Honorable mention goes out to our fearless leader...Billy Ward for actually mentioning Bill and getting so close in his guess.....those dark cymbals can be quite telling.

Well that's 3 up 3 down bottom of the ninth...that went kinda quick......maybe next time I will pick a more obscure drumming track make it a bit more challenging.
