hi everybody,
i've seen this in an acoustic guitar forum and just loved it! when, where and how did the first ding happen to your instrumen?

this was some years back....
it was my first set of drums (a special edition pearl export set), my most thought after posession at the time. it was actually the secound time i took them out of the house. we played at a friends party with my secound band, punk back in the days 
they have a house by a nice lake and it's somewhat hard to get there. of couse i had no cases 
so you had to get domn some stair to get to the house, left and right to these stairs was some gras and smaller bushes and trees... i was carring the bassdrum and all of a sudden a part of the stairs broke and in was falling, more rolling down besides the stairs and my bass drum took the way down the stairs. must have looked spectacular... i was crushed  first (only) time i fell down some stairs so the adrenalin was pretty high at that moment but still it was hard to stand to see the bassdrum
in this condition. i didn't hurt too bad som scuffs here and there but nothing to mention.
after that i got cases and didn't worry about dings anymore

Hi Paul:
My custom ordered Gretsch drums are 29 years old this month. This makes it hard to remember my first ding because its too long ago. I guess I have gotten over that feeling and I always had cases. But I do remember quite a few years ago when my little girl of three knocked over my hi hat stand and dinged my Sabian AA hi hats (that I actually still have and play all the time). That really ticked me off inside, but she's my little girl (who's 21 year old now). I mean what could I do, but hold her and forgive her right. My son has had more than one drummer friend jam on my drum kit and break a cymbal, that is always fun to deal with inside myself and with my son. I usually leave heavy cymbals on the kit that are harder to break so I don't get a mad about it when he jams in my studio anymore. Now you know what I think it is funny is that guitar players actually pay more money for new instruments that have been beat by someone at the factory. They call these instruments "vintage reissue" of the classic guitar model. Can you see some drummer actually pay more for Gretsch to beat-up their reissued round badge kit with chains to get that dinged-up vintage look? NO! Let me do that myself is my motto and let me pay less if it is dinged up.

I had a set of '72 Rogers that I got when I was 14. They rarely left my house till I was about 25, when I got in my first gigging band. I didn't
have cases for them yet and I had to haul them to gigs in my car trunk and back seat. At some point my floor tom wound up laying against all my hardware and
some pretty deep scuffs and scratches were the result. I felt like someone had knocked the wind out of me.........in 11 years those drums had never had a
scratch on them and now they were defiled. After a while I convinced myself that they were just inevitable "road scars" that proved that I was a
gigging musician but I never really got over it.
I bought soft cases shortly after and have had them for all my gear since then. Cases rule.
