(It's just a guess. I don't know the song and don't have a real strong feeling.) The clues seem to point to someone like Omar and it sounds like his toms and maybe his touch. (BTW, I always thought that Omar and Philly Joe Jones had a similar touch but you can't really tell from this track.) And I feel kinda bad about saying this but the little bit of stuff that I have heard Omar do as a leader sounds like this sort of generic Fuzak. It's a shame if this is Omar, because the track and the drumming sounds like it could be anyone as far as I am concerned. I'm a HUGE Omar fan but it's the Omar Hakim that played on Techno, Shadows in the Rain, Db Waltz and even with Bowie and Madonna that I love. I seem to like him better as a sideman than as a bandleader or co-leader. Now please tell me that I am wrong and that this is not Omar Hakim." Many influences, for sure. Our player has definitely slipped into a more single minded approach in the 18 (or so) years since this track was done. Great guesses so far! Keep 'em comin'. I, not unlike Amba, now have a couple of names to research as well. Martial Drum: Two excellent guesses & now I have to find out who Adam Dietch is so, obviuosly it's not him. Dennis Chambers is a very interesting guess but, I've never heard his druns sound like that & I think it might be a little more calculated than Dennis would play it. So, not him either I'm affraid. Thanks for playing. Mario: What a great guess! There are a lot of elements of Chad's playing to be heard there. Alas, not Mr. Wackerman either. Am I starting to talk like Amba? The track was done in 1989 & I think everybody was still ODing on Yamaha RCs, 13" K over Zs & trying to play better tempo than a Yamaha RX-5 drum machine (thanks to Mr. Weckl). TLC has come a long way since then. Her work with Wayne Shorter is no less than jaw dropping. Thanks everybody. Can't wait to hear WAI 13. I loves dis here game! If it's Art Blakey or Buddy Rich or Billy Cobham, I could name that drummer very easily. But in this case, and in others, it's taken my thinking about the clues (child prodigy, knew Max, etc) to come to an answer. I do know my music trivia & history, so once a few guesses are out of the way and I have some background, I'm pretty good. But I do not claim to have the ears of BDubya and many of the members of the BWSS members. counting the days 'til 1.20.09

Drummers have the toughest time establishing an identity because the instrument is subject to so many other people's input. You're a problem if you don't go along with the artist, or the producer, or the sound man. We (drummers) also tend to get caught up in the latest hip trip. Back in the '80s, I had an OctaPad, left hand floor tom & tried to play like a machine. That TLC track was 15 flavors of vanilla (not that there's anything wrong with that) but, there was still a crumb of the artist there even though she was caught up in a trend. Billy heard the pocket & the touch. I know we've got more sensitivity to style than we think & WAI is certainly great ear training. Excellent work no matter how you arrived at the answer. We're all getting better because of this. YOU DA MAN this round bbunks. McT.
