Hi Jeff, Thank you so much for your kind comments and I'm sorry that I'm a bit delayed in answering them. Generally when given a bit of music to make a contribution to, I really just listen to the overall feel of the existing elements and try to let that guide my conceptualization of the parts. So I generally start quite simply as opposed to the other way around, although there were TIMES when I thought I was starting simply and found myself simplyfying even further to get to the right part. Admittedly there are times when I create a very elaborate part, that is quite detailed but that is genearlly an evolution over a period of time and trying out LOTS of different things before arriving there. Having said that, I feel like all of my "composed' parts are a work in progress anyway and often go through many revisions depending on the arrangement at the time. For a lot of the Tull music we have had a multitude of different arrangements of the same song over the years, so my playing and parts adjust accordingly. Hope that helps you!
