Will post here after a powerful few days with my family.
Slog On, Forrest
Friday July 6, 2007 Afternoon
Sorry, my internet due to a nearby accident was 'out yesterday. Chances of that happening again is about as likely as bbunks winning...say some K Light Hi Hats. chirp chirp
What a solid week this was
Last week was first of many shows behind new Ludwigs. Powerful, as DD sayssomething so right about them.
I did have one issue.
After my 4 1/2 month isolation oncology sabbatical -
I incorporated a 24" bass drum into my setup giving me a higher rack than before causing me to sit higher than ever.
This has been soul solid physically for me.
Waved bye bye to much of the cancer pain experienced in past
Solid feeling of gratitude I could even drum this last month let alone DO IT without 'anymore' discomfort.
(Lost a plethora of muscle in my back last 5 months from surgery.)
My Ludwig bass drum being 22 and tom arm not as long well, easy to figure. Ouchy in the main.
The last part of the 45 min set I was feeling it. (Powerful sound though from 22.)
So went for the quick fix. Ordered a 26 bass drum matching. Maybe this SICKO can get a prescription and have insurance cover it. chirp chirp
Note: Got to say it....
Feeling Full Mac-Daddy euphoria just talking drums and having all these experiences playing them.
Cannot stop smiling when playing shows.
Feel Lucky in the main.
Im freaking playing DRUMS!
Simple but meaningful is the best feeling.
Who am I?
-Just another drummer exploring my sound, setup and lexis.
Blissful in the main to play music.
Elated to have a go at Ludwigs.
DWs will happen. Oh Yes.
I am one thrilled mofo.
Life is Good.
Fourth of July:
Made some friends while playing at this casino last weekend who also insisted I come over to their firework stand later.
It was the kind of firework stand where a stick of dynamite is labeled a firecracker.
Sufficed to say, after they filled my suburban with a plethora of brown bag specials, I made sure NOT to have any traffic infractions during the 1 1/2 hour commute home that would give cause to pull me over
Inside consisted of me, drums, drums, cymbals, drums, fireworks, fireworks, crazy ace fireworks, are you out of your gourd fireworks and 25 to life for possession fireworks.
Candidly, I thought how maybe my new firework giving friends in fact hated my drumming and were setting me up to lose fingers? No., Limbs? YES! Then it hit me like a Billy Ward Trueline signature model 5 a stick. ($9.95 a pair or 2 for $25.)
I am Sloggy not Navin.
Now aware of the adversity out there awaiting Navins routine bush-league playing Im feeling somewhat penitent for past thumpings.
Wait... standby.
Passing thing. No remorse at all. Very weird.
We slog on.
Neighbors and friends gathered my place evening of the 4th. I with my daughters planned and choreographed a show. The Ohhh and Awes never stopped for almost 2 hours.
Still have most of my toes and fingers. One casualty - but pinky toes are overrated.
I used my manual wheelchair instead of electric. That way when igniting the power max u 1 niner all you can handle fireworks, I could shove off with my feet to scoot away.
My electric chair is built for distance. 0-14 mph in 3.4 minutes. If an honest tailwind.
Solid, but my being one of the top fire work setter offers need quick bursts of speed.
Process: I would light powerfully massive firework, slam my feet to ground and push-off back violently in my wheelchair to get away.
A respectable push off with my feet would take me 25 feet minimum.
Due to over zealous scoots I did crash brutally into obstructions a few times.
Crashing out of my wheel chair my arms would flail like a little girl being chased by killer bees followed by a triple lindy half flounce mongated cart wheel into the nearby Jacuzzi.
All eyes now on a soaked embarrassed me while dazzling fireworks danced over head; piteously, your drummer extraordinaire had become the show.
Its hard to be cool.
Side Note: Back East Billy Ward was skipping naked merrily with a sparkler in each hand yelling, The red coats are coming, the red coats are coming!
My kids gave me a hug and said laterbest fireworks ever!
That was the best feeling.
Prepare now for weekly Navin Slam:
Sloggy = Powerful firework setter offer.
Navin= Solid sparkler setter offer.
Feel a sneeze coming. aah ahh NAVINisaPOODLEchoo.
Feels weird to have spot on sneezes Very Powerful.
Classic Sayings Spoken in the Past:
Forrest: A good sneeze is the best feeling.
Navin: A good sleazy whore is the best feeling.
Follow-up on Jazzy Cymbals:
Ronn Dunnett wrote review that sums up powerfully what a cymbals characteristics should be accompanying singer/s.
Ronn on Andrew Borger using Bosphorus Cymbals - Nora Jones Concert in Vancouver
: I want to rave about Andrew's cymbal set up too. I'll post a picture of the set up, but without getting into the specifics, this set was really, really sweet. They were deep, rich, full - and very appealing because they did what cymbals do, but they just flew in so nicely under the sonic radar. They were huge and they were present and I found myself waiting for Andy to hit them again just to be sure that what I heard the first, second or tenth time wasn't my imagination. The cymbals - and how Andrew played them - did nothing to distract from the frequencies of Norah's vocals.

Random Musings:
My daughter asked if she could download Earth Wind and Fire.
Sometimes you feel like this Father thing is getting dialed in. Very Powerful.
Eddie Van Halen looks great. We have all seen the pictures where he looks like a Peter Jackson creation for Lord of the Rings 8.
Not now, Solid.
Seeing him Cover of Guitar magazine stopped me in my slow moving tracks. Very Powerful.
Wonder sometimes what Billys average trip into DW is like.
(John and Don is solid friends of Billys.)
Does Billy tinker various products? Has he tried most drums I see in catalogues? Bamboo? May system or EQ snare? A and B various drums side by side? Choose wood for new set? Smoke doobies?
Reminds me, DO they still have production on signature snares?
Here is my month drumming going forward in short: July- recording- recording- rehearse, teaching, live playing, live playing, recording, recording, live playing. More pie.
What is wrong with that picture?
No practice. I need to write in practice like I write in my drumming dates. (I need practice, but then again I am no Aaron if I dont so I get by. Chirp chirp)
Very Powerful.
It is time I make drumming goals going forward. Wonder if anyone else goals it up?
I always feel sad when I hear drummers mourn things they would like to do in drumming but are not. Sometimes just want to say reach baby. Very unPowerful
DrumForum.org Steve Bowman has a powerful blog. Starting Over from beginning is a soul solid read. (Link page bottom.)
Look for the Billy Truism: Practicing and getting gigs. Very Powerful.
Ipod shuffled to Billys #5 on new CD. Billy is using hands soul solid.
Enjoy Forrest.
I will.
Very Powerful.
Drummers with endorsementssolid. Drummers with no endorsementssolid.
Ritual of buying, looking and listening new record/album. Miss it. Very unPowerful.
Side note: Got my 7th tattoo this last week. It is a bad ace for sure. Not many drummers could pull this beast off.
Truth: Is Seventh everlasting mark/tattoo for radiation Oncologist doctors have to know where to point and shoot.
My daughter is 13 determined/reading to be a Forensic Detective. Her current study is Robert Manns new book. (Yamaha Evans will mentor some guidance/consultation when we get out that way.)
Our living in a mortuary till she was 2 and seeing various autopsies, embalmed bodies, etc. while carrying her locking up each evening is probably the genesis of this aspiration. Very powerful?
Not sure what to believe concerning SICKO?
I was diagnosed with cancer at age 30. I am now 37. I am still fighting.
Knowing the struggles of so many patients/friends come and gone is life changing.
I continue to share wings of various hospitals receiving radiation/chemo while traveling for drumming (etc.)
Visit any cancer ward of any hospital/clinic. (Any Wing will do however...)
Solid hard working fair minded people will greet you like yourselves. chirp chirp
Ask for their stories.
Maybe youll be surprised. Maybe youll feel differently. Maybe not.
But youll know if a critical red flag flies.
