I live in Beijing, China. It is one of the most populated cities in the most populated country in the world. Consequently, human life, inadvertantly or not, is held in less regard than other places. This is reflected in the way people drive, their quick tempers, the way they are willing to trod upon the next man just to get a little bit further ahead, regardless of how much jeopardy their actions place themselves and others in. I've only met Billy once, albeit very briefly. Despite being practically strangers, he has gone out of his way to help me solve various gear related problems, invited me to see his clinics and given us all a great place to learn and exhange ideas on this board. I've never met Maura, but from what Billy says, she is a big influence on him. The lessons and kindness that Billy has shown us here are the kinds of lessons I try to impart to my Chinese students - that there's more to drumming and music than notes, that music should make us feel something, and that we should hold ourselves to higher standards in our art, profession and life. It's a good feeling to be able to say that we are part of a lineage, from Max Roach to Elvin, to Maura and Billy, however brief yet influential the encounter, no matter how far down the line. Hopefully the lessons learned here and elsewhere are lessons that can be passed to my students, so that they may improve their lot here and begin to understand the value of both their lives and their dreams. No matter what happens, or when, Billy and Maura, your contributions to us, and through us to others, will live forever. Hope to hear some good news soon.
